The Dalai has demanded an international investigation into Friday's riots and the subsequent crackdown on protesters in Lhasa. "Some respected international organizations can find out what the situation is in Tibet and what is the cause," the Dalai Lama said on Sunday in McLeodganj. The 73-year-old spiritual leader of the Tibetans was addressing the media for the first time after violent protests broke out in Tibet against Chinese oppression. He said there was cultural repression of Tibetans in their country by Chinese authorities and maintained that Tibetans just want autonomy within China and were not demanding independence. Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso (born Llhamo Döndrub (Tibetan: ལ; Wylie: Lha-mo Don-'grub) 6 July 1935 in Tibet), is the fourteenth and current Dalai Lama. He is a practicing member of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism and is influential as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, as the world's most famous Buddhist monk, and as exiled leader of the Tibetan government in Dharamsala, India.
